Six Senses Zighy Bay
MOOD: BOHO, LUXE, NATURE
BUDGET: $$$$
When luxury eco-resort Six Senses arrived in 2008, Zighy Bay was a tiny backwater fishing village. Since then, little has changed. The rugged Hajar Mountains are strict guards, keeping the area remote and isolated, allowing only guests in the form of local goats. (Its impassibility was solved by the clever gimmick of offering hotel guests the option of paragliding on arrival.) Zighy Bay is unbelievably quiet, you feel too self-conscious to speak above a whisper. The only sounds are the waves lapping onshore the mile-long beach, softly, almost delicately; and perhaps the short clicks on a keyboard, for such a place of solitude inspires autobiographies. (Case in point, the movies on the beach provide headphones.)
The price is dear, rates regularly touch four digits (USD), but a stay could be justified as for your health. A staff of 300 takes care of the 82 villas. Each has its own 24-hour private butler. Daily stress – including decisions on what to do or eat – are taken care of. At Six Senses Zighy Bay, your job is to relax, rewind and recoup. Even the confines of footwear solves itself: barefoot is best. Having peace with nature transitions to having peace with oneself. Here, in the crisp mountain air, rock climbing, hiking, biking and gliding give adrenaline a kick – a boost of pure energy to tackle whatever comes your way. Or play explorer scuba diving in darkly-deep, mysterious waters or canyoning rocky wadis – inspiring new discoveries on your own life’s path. End the day indulging in Zigby Bay’s famous spa, where indigenous ingredients – goat’s milk, dates, frankincense, sea salt, honey – revive the body and mind.
