Indus
MOOD: LUXE
BUDGET: $$$
The chicest Indian restaurant in Muscat, Indus, holds center stage in the Opera Galleria complex. It commands attention – away from neighboring international brands that deem this quarter the city’s most prestigious – through its large scale and posh decor. The main dining room centers a floor-to-ceiling sculpture by Omani artist Essa Ahmed Al Mafarji – two figures, one with hands towards the sky and the other reaching for him. Apocalyptic or a rebirth? Up to debate. But the drama definitely signals “you’ve arrived.”
Indus charms with the liberal use of turquoise: a cheerful but elegant color, better to set off the purity of the whites and rich woods. Seating is plush, cushioned with pillows. It is inviting, but not overly-eager. The outdoor terrace gives an unique vantage over the Opera House – that is power dining at its best. You are associated with the symbol of Oman’s new and best. It would be humbling if weren’t an ego boost.
Indus is competitive. It does upscale dining right, to an expected T. The restaurant doesn’t reinvent with its dishes, the compact menu focuses on what diners know and want. The kitchen is exposed behind glass. It executes Indian staples well, cleanly, and expensively. The best dining companion is someone you do not know well, but want to impress.
