Mumtaz Mahal

Named after the wife of Emperor Shah Jahan who built the Taj Mahal in her honor, stepping into the world of Mumtaz Mahal is like stepping into a modern-Mughal fantasy. The building itself is a striking work of contemporary architecture, a notable mark on the landscape of Muscat. It sits there regally perched high above Qurum Nature Reserve, opening to a panoramic view of the beach below. A large wooden door reveals an elegant interior, generously decorated with South Asian artwork on the walls. It the diner’s choice of current or traditional seating, whether in rattan chairs overlooking the bay, or low tables indoors. Live sitar and drum music provide the soundtrack. But the love – the tribute to her – resonates most in the Northern Indian Mughal cuisine: a wide-variety of fiery spices, succulent meats, and savory curries paired with hot-out-of-the-oven naan, all your favorites covered.

For 30 years Mumtaz Mahal has been the preferred restaurant for locals celebrating a good time with good taste. It’s not a scene, but an institution – one that finds fans with critics (8-time winner of “Best Indian Restaurant” from the Oman Today Restaurant Awards), families, and foodies. In that regard, the prices are a tad higher than its competitors (nothing shocking), the waitstaff can be less friendly than you’d like (usually too busy for a chat), and you will need to reserve in advance.
