Sprawling and lively, for over two centuries Mutrah Souk has been the hub of commerce and mercantile activity in Muscat. It may be the city’s most popular tourism destination, but that is because it is a pretty authentic glimpse into local life. Sure, some shops realize that tourist dollars are easy and sell camel keychains in response, many focus on its loyal local clientele – a common sight are the elderly men who gather at the entrance’s traditional coffeehouse.

Beginning through the gate off Mutrah Corniche, you are your own guide, meandering through dense, chaotic alleyways on this-and-that-whim. You dig through barrels of Omani silver, each piece different and precious, impartially sold by weight. Each discovery inspires the next: from jewelry to swords to embroidered gowns to perfume to frankincense to spices to thick slabs of sweet gelatinous Omani Halwa (addictive and cheap – a great purchase). The Souk is a lot larger than expected. There are signs that warn you to stop once you approach the the city’s old quarters, the Shiite district of Al-Lawataya. Take a turn and head west to the Gold Souk instead, splendid and dazzling even under the timber roof.
