Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort
MOOD: CLASSIC, LUXE, NATURE, RELAX
BUDGET: $$, $$$, $$$$
The rough ride on a barren, mountainous path almost reaches a point of fatigue when suddenly the Sea of Oman appears, rock formations majestic in the water. Breathtakingly beautiful. Now excited, you shift your gaze. There you see it, an illusion in the bay: the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort. 124 acres of sculptured gardens and prime seafront on its own secluded paradise.
Sheltered by mountains and enveloped by desert solitude, it is the closest to staycation as you can get in Muscat. The Shangri-La is a village of three kasbah-style hotels set on the dramatic Al Jissah coastline. There is a hotel for every taste: Al Bandar (“The Town”) for business; Al Husn (“The Castle”) for “6 star” indulgence, and Al Waha (“The Oasis”) for families. Each rising with distinction, yet blending into the salmon-tan colored surroundings with its dusty color palette.
The grounds are manicured, nurtured and sublime. Pools play off the blues of the bay. White umbrellas that dot the beach end in a dramatic point. Palm trees shield from the burn of the sun. But the star is still nature who lures with her mix of jagged rocks, soft sand, and deep turquoise water. Come sundown, she puts on a spectacular show.
ROOMS
Local artwork adorn the warmly luxurious rooms. Hues are comforting, earthy browns and neutrals, with Al Husn more richly dressed in jewel toned silks. Every room has its own terrace, balcony or patio. Freebies like the complimentary minibar (beer, soft drinks, water, chocolates, snacks) make you feel like home.
