Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais
MOOD: CLASSIC, CULTURE
BUDGET: $, $$
Step into history at the Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais, on one of the oldest streets in Paris, dating back to medieval times, in an area that was first favored by royalty, then laid to squalor. The mansion has been updated with modern conveniences (including free wi-fi), but remains true to the spirit of its 18th century roots. It is a tribute to its long ago neighbor Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, the esteemed author of Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro.
Compact rooms, narrow balconies, and slight windows typical to the era would otherwise be inconvenient if the hotel were not so captivating in its historical romance. Chandeliers, gilded mirrors, silk (faux) Louis XV furniture, sensual portraits of creamy-skinned beauties, floral drapes with matching wallpaper, plentiful objets d’arts, and a 1792 pianoforte paint a luxurious portrait of 1700s high society. As always, it can be a difficult choice between noisy but larger rooms that face the street; quieter rooms peering over the courtyard; or upper level low ceilings with a view of the rooftops.
