L’Hôtel
MOOD: AFTER HOURS, ART, BOHO, LUXE
BUDGET: $$$
“I am dying beyond my means,” dramatized Oscar Wilde, flamboyant provocateur and purveyor of taste moonlighting as literary star. His final resting place was room 16 at L’Hotel.
Its name declares: “the hotel.” It does not exaggerate: enshrouded in mystery and romance, 5 star L’Hotel is the quintessential Parisian hotel. Situated in the best location in the Left Bank, it beats with the heart of all things gloriously French: bohemian arts and high fashion, in one jewel box of a package. Behind its plain exterior, discreetly out of view, its interior is proudly luxurious, decadent Marie Antoinette-let them eat cake, why leave any corner unadorned when a carved maiden or mystical creature will do? Walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, no matter! It is swathed in rich velvet, candy stripes, expensive marble, more is more. A private swimming pool in the vault exemplifies the dynamic: hidden beneath, yet grand in its extravagance.
No wonder, after Jacques Garcia’s opulent renovation in the 60s, it became the pied-à-terre of the world’s most glamorous: Princess Grace of Monaco, Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra. It was also here that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton continued their tumultuous affair. This is a hotel that charms and seduces in a city that charms and seduces.
ROOMS
A dazzling spiral staircase, all curves, leads to 20 themed rooms that travel across history’s most exotic times: from IndoChina to Imperial Russia to Belle Epoque. The rooms are small, starting at 17 square meters, but brim with such character that you excuse the scarcity of space. The largest room, the “Apartment,” is draped in generous red silks and velvet, inspired by a cardinal’s regal robes. It also has a magnificent rooftop terrace over Saint Germain-des Prés, just like your dream Parisian apartment.
