Rachel’s Pont aux Choux

Contrary to what you’ve been told, the French love Americans. They love basketball (especially the San Antonio Spurs starring their own Tony Parker); some love the prep school Ralph Lauren look, other love Beyoncé/Jay Z hip hop style, and, the rest emulate Brooklyn/Portland hipsters. Forget eclairs and millefeuille, Parisians want what Ohioan Rachel Moeller’s Americana classics: bagels, carrot cake, apple pie and those decadent cheesecakes. From a homegrown operation – an apartment crammed with kitchen equipment – selling made-to-order baked goods to hip restaurants like Le Bal Café, Rachel recently expanded to a nakesame all-American diner, spinning bar stools and all.
The lines are outrageous, especially for, what else, that American tradition, brunch. They line up for homemade coleslaw, pickles, deli meats, pulled pork, French fries and ice cream. The favorites are pastrami on house rye bread, blueberry pancakes and, yes, kale salad. Oh-so-Américain, but with the quality and display of a Parisian eye.
